This year, SIJ Ravne Systems Laboratories are celebrating their 35th anniversary! Exactly thirty-five years ago, a modern laboratory was built on the northwest edge of the ironworks complex in Ravne na Koroškem as one of the last major investments in the then-unified company Železarna Ravne.
The laboratory, also known as the Defectoscopic Metrology Laboratory (DML), was officially opened on November 29, 1988. The initiator for the opening of the laboratory was Mirko Pikalo, who successfully led it until his retirement in 2011. Along with a young and ambitious team of colleagues, including the first employees Darinka Arnšek, Mirko Ovčar, and Marija Skudnik, they focused on non-destructive material testing and dimensional control with modern equipment such as industrial X-rays and CNC-guided measuring machines.
The laboratory soon gained recognition due to state-of-the-art equipment and the professional knowledge of its employees. In 1997, we became the first laboratory in Slovenian industry to obtain international accreditation, confirming our high standards and commitment to quality.
Today, the laboratories are an independent program within the SIJ Ravne Systems company. Together with the laboratories of SIJ Acroni and SIJ Metal Ravne, they form the largest system of connected industrial laboratories in Slovenia under the brand SILABS.
The program consists of a laboratory for non-destructive testing and a calibration laboratory, where 23 employees, under the leadership of Mag. Matjaž Hudopisk, continue to maintain the quality level with top-notch knowledge and equipment. They lead this successful story forward – towards the next 35 years – with accredited laboratory services and non-destructive testing for companies in Slovenia and neighboring countries.
